How to play with 7 SPHERES™ card deck

The games have different levels of difficulty so all family members and friends from the age of 5 can play, use their memory, be strategic, have fun while learning about the Earth System Science.
Below is a list of card games you can play with 7 SPHERES.

Colour Snap

Colour Snap game

Before you start

  • 5 years old +
  • 3 to 6 players
  • Plays with the 42 Speciality cards

How to play

  1. Shuffle and deal out all the cards. Players do not look at their cards and hold them in a stack in front of them, face down.
  2. Each player flips the top card from their stack and places it face up in a pile central to all players.
  3. When a player notices any pair of matching colour, they race to slam one hand on the pile and yell “Snap!”.
  4. The player who says “Snap!” first wins the pile of cards and add them to the bottom of their stack.
  5. If a player runs out of cards, they are out.
  6. The first player to collect the entire deck of cards wins the game.

Crab

Crab game

Goal of the game

This is our version of Old Maid. The aim of the game is to pair cards by color, avoid ending with the Crab Joker card card in your hands.

Before you start

  • 5 years old +
  • 3 to 6 players
  • Plays with the 42 Speciality Cards (so there are 3 matching pairs per specialty) + the crab joker card

How to play

  1. Shuffle and deal out all the cards.
  2. Players remove all the colour matching pairs from their hands and place them face up on the table.
  3. A player begins the game by offering their fanned out cards face down towards the person on their left.
  4. That person selects a card and adds it to theirs.
  5. If the card matches a card they hold, they can pair them and place the pair with the others on the table. If the card does not match any other, the player keeps it.
  6. The player that just picked a card now repeat step 2 with player on their left.The game continues until all pairs have been matched. The player who is left with the Crab card loses the game.

Happy Families

Happy families game

Goal of the game

The goal of this 7 SPHERES game is to collect as many Spheres (“families”) as possible with their complete set of Speciality Cards.

Before you start

  • From 5 years+
  • 3 to 6 players
  • For this game you only need the 42 Speciality cards.

How to play

    1. Shuffle the cards and deal 7 cards to each player.
    2. Make a stack with the remaining cards.
    3. The first player selects an opponent and asks them for a particular card, such as:

“In the Cryosphere, I would like Glaciology”

or for younger children:

“I would like the card B4”

  1. The player can only request a card if they already have a card in that Sphere.
  2. If the opponent has the requested card then they give it to the player, if not, the player picks up a card from the stack.
  3. If the card the player takes from the stack is the card they requested the player says “Good Catch” and plays again. Otherwise, it is the turn of the next player on the right.
  4. A card given to a player can only be requested by the opponent after two further rounds.
  5. When a player has all 6 Speciality Cards for a Sphere they place the completed set in front of them. The game continues even when there are no more cards left in the stack.
  6. The player who has the most completed Spheres wins!

Variant

  • Use the 5 Jokers. Jokers can be played whenever a player asks for a card.

Number Snap

Number Snap game

Before you start

How to play

Same rules as Colour Snap but players match cards according to numbers (1 to 6) situated in top right and left corners of speciality cards.

Memory

Memory game

Goal of the game

The aim of the game is to gather as many complete spheres (colours) as possible.

Before you start

  • 5 years old +
  • 2 to 3 teams of players
  • Plays with the 42 Speciality Cards

How to play

  1. Shuffle the cards. Arrange all the 42 cards face down.
  2. The first team reveals 6 cards and memorises the cards’ location, then hides the cards again.
  3. When a team reveals 6 cards of the same sphere (colour), they win that sphere and places it in front of them.
  4. The winning team is the one that obtains more spheres than the other.

Guessing

Guessing game

Goal of the game

The goal of this game is to be the first player to reach 100 points.

Before you start

  • Suitable for 5 years old +
  • 3 to 6 players
  • Plays with 49 cards: the 7 Sphere Cards + the 42 Speciality Cards

How to play

  1. Shuffle the cards and place them in a stack in the centre.
  2. The first player takes the card on top of the stack and reads its definition to the person on their right.
  3. The person obtains 5 points if they guess the Sphere’s name, and 15 points if they guess the Speciality’s name.
  4. The first player to reach 100 points wins.
